Is THIS really neccessary?

So one of my family members has recently joined the Army National Guard. Being a previous Military brat and wife I know a little bit about all of "odd" things that going on during drills and training. Today though, even I was absolutely shocked by what this weekends training included. We were informed that today's training included the proper placement and securing of an infant/toddler seat in a Humvee. I just wanted to be sure your on the same page so you can agree with how preposterous this is. Are you with me now? OK moving on...

Seriously, car seats? Is that really necessary? I mean I don't know how many children under the age of 5 are enlisted in the guard these days but I would guess um....none. Or maybe they have a newly instated "bring your children to work day" every week. Where you can drive around with your toddlers in your standard issued military vehicle while the older children get to man the machine guns and navigate. Doubtful. Thinking about this logically and for several hours now, I just don't really see the sense in spending several hours training our soldiers to do this. I don't know what all is going on overseas at this point, but are our soldiers really spending time driving around picking up stranded children on the side of the road? Surely not, considering the increased risk for road side bombings and all. So lets say they are spending even a minuscule amount of time inquiring about stranded children, is it really necessary that time be taken to properly place the safety seat in the vehicle? I mean good grief I would think the less time spent on something like that the better. Not that I am against protecting children in any way but I just don't see how the proper placement of a car seat is going to protect a child from a stray bullet or an IED. I know that the news is never really completely true, but I watch it and read the newspaper pretty regularly. I don't recall Anderson Cooper ever mentioning anything about child casualties in Iraq or Afghanistan due to not wearing a seat belt or malfunctioning child safety restraints due to improper placement or user error. In all honesty this doesn't really effect me much and other than the initial annoyance this caused my family member today I wont really investigate this further. Just couldn't help but think it was Blog worthy for sure. If anyone one has an answer or possible suggestion as to why our military is setting aside a special time to train our soldiers to do this please let me know.
